These 2000 mL student grade Erlenmeyer flasks are perfect for making yeast starters. One great advantage for Erlenmeyer flasks is that you can boil liquids directly in them. These large flasks are ideal for creating large yeast starters for 5 gallon batches of low temperature fermentations or high gravity brews. Because of the borosilicate glass that it’s made from, the flask can be moved directly from the boil into a cold water bath for cooling without any risk of cracking or breaking.
Note: The use of an electric element is not recommend. If this can’t be avoided, it is recommend to use a larger pot as a hot water bath on the stove.
If heating… the Double Boiler Method is the recommended process for flask use: For your safety, it is important to heat liquid in the flask with a heat source that distributes heat evenly. The manufacturer for these flasks has confirmed that direct heat to the glass can break down its integrity and break if the heat is distributed evenly.
The Double Boiler Method process is using a boiling water bath on the outside of the flask to heat up the water inside the flask. All you need is a 3 gallon kettle (or larger). This process is much safer and efficient. If the flask were to break or boil over, the kettle is there to prevent not only a mess, but will also keep you safe.
These flasks are “Student Grade”. Student grade is not the highest grade flask and may have minor defects which will not have an effect on yeast starters or cultures.
